  • School Philosophy, Culture and Ethos

Since 1959, Serangoon Garden Secondary School (SGS) has enjoyed the trust and confidence of the community for over 61 years. SGS is known and valued for nurturing SGSians through a strong culture of compassion, respect and care, and an innovative future-ready curriculum. Through this, many SGSians have had their lives transformed. Our distinguished alumni have exemplified the vision of "Critical Thinkers. Thoughtful Leaders." displaying their abilities to navigate the complexities and ambiguities of the future while guided by the school values of Perseverance, Respect, Integrity, Diligence and Empathy (P.R.I.D.E). Some of the PRIDE of SGS include Football coach Fandi Ahmad and local entrepreneur Mr Francis Ng(owner, House of Seafood) and many more.

In our journey of growing future-ready compassionate and contributing citizens, the school has committed ourselves in harnessing innovative pedagogies. These include the incorporation of Thinking Routines, Design Thinking and leveraging the affordances of technology to enable SGSians to have greater autonomy and choices in their own learning. Varied opportunities are provided for SGSians through the Level Signature programmes (including overseas trips) and co-curricular activities (CCAs) to realise their fullest potential through authentic learning.

  • Distinctive Programmes

All students enrolling in SGSS are emplaced on our Applied Learning Programme (ALP) "Researching Society through Media Literacy" and our Learning for Life Programme (LLP) "Nurturing Confident and Compassionate Leaders". The ALP programme nurtures the voices of concerned citizens in SGSians through researching and solving real-world problems by leveraging on media technology. It hopes to deepen our students# 21st Century Competencies and development of metacognition understanding via different academic subjects. The Learning for Life Programme (LLP) aims to nurture confident and compassionate leaders who will serve the school and the community. In SGSS, we provide leadership training for all students to discover their strengths and build their leadership competencies. Students who demonstrate greater aptitude and interests in learning and serving will be given opportunities to participate in advanced leadership courses and apply their learning in leading class/school-wide/community events. In preparing SGSians to be future-ready, the school also has extensive Education and Career Guidance (ECG) programmes including enrichment programmes with various Polytechnics, ITE colleges and Business enterprises to allow our students of varied profiles to gain exposure of life after secondary education. Our programme was conferred the Lee Hsien Loong Award for Innovations in the Normal Course (LHL-AIN), affirming the quality of our programmes for students in the Normal Course. Other distinctive programmes include: Level Signature Programme (LSP) to provide learning opportunities for all SGSians beyond their classrooms, and strengthen peer and teacher-student relationship (TSR) through collaborative participation, Work Shadowing Programme to develop our students' resilience and critical thinking through authentic work experiences, and Overseas Cultural Immersion Programme to raise cross-cultural awareness in students.
